Read Around the World

Read Around the World was first developed in during the 2004-2005 school year in honor of the Year of Languages. Read Around the World is a voluntary service-learning program for high school and college students. FLAGS and the Sacramento Public Library work in partnership to present this program to the community each year. Students learn and practice children's stories in the target language and then learn how to present those stories in a way that is fun, engaging and comprehensible to an audience of children who may not speak the language. Finally, the students perform the stories at designated Read Around the World story times arranged at their local libraries.

If you are interested in finding out about the program, please review the information packet. You may also want to look at the Teacher Participation Checklist and the Qualities of a Good Story sheet. If you are in the Sacramento area and have never participated in Read Around the World before and would like to be part of the current academic-year program, you will need to work with an experienced program teacher. Contact Nicole Naditz to make arrangements to work with an experienced teacher, find about more information about Read Around the World, or start a program outside of Sacramento.

Check back later for the current academic year schedule of performances. Even if your students don't present stories, you may want them to attend the performances as an enrichment experience.
